Pro-Gun Book Review: Essential Liberty

Essential Liberty is Rob Olive’s classic of a government confiscating firearms, it’s extremely believable and scary, and the author has made a few updates to reflect the current realities of our time.  Such as the ATF becoming ATFE (E is for explosives).

Here are two book reviews from other people:

I rarely do book reviews, and I sometimes struggle with myself on books I end up choosing to promote. I did just that with “Essential Liberty,” and this surprised me because it’s a well-written, movie-paced page-turner. My problem was being able to relate some of the characters to plausible individuals relatable to my own experiences, until I realized that I was being guilty of shallow, knee-jerk reactions. And that’s where I found real strength in what I first perceived as potential disqualifiers.”–David Codrea, National Gun Rights Examiner, Field Editor of Guns Magazine

“Essential Liberty, by author Rob Olive, tackles our greatest fears: The widespread prohibition and subsequent confiscation of firearms from law-abiding citizens, and the resulting moral, ethical, and constitutional crises. This isn’t just about guns, it’s about civil liberties, families, friendships, and abuses of power. I highly recommend Essential Liberty; this one is a “must read” for Second Amendment advocates and political fence sitters alike.”–Keith Wood, Host of the National Rifle Association’s “Bullshooters” Blog

Here’s my review. While I’m enjoying this story, it’s quite the page-turner, I do wish the author would focus more on the interesting stuff and not the mundane. Do I have to know that Nicolescu made love to his wife after dinner? I get it that most writers like to humanize their characters, but I rather get the political/conspiracy stuff.  For example, the ATF agent creating a false firearms record of someone that has never owned a gun was very interesting. The idea that the government could pursue their enemies by creating false crimes on paper is simply terrifying.

Overall, I recommend this book not just for gun owners but anyone who enjoys political fiction. Liberals should read it to, after all, they’re the ones that fantasize about confiscating firearms, well, this book will show them how exactly that takes place. Furthermore, I give kudos to the writer for making the protagonist (Don) a political moderate and non-gun owner.

Books like Patriots: A Novel of Survival in the Coming Collapsefeature characters that are ubermench in everything they do. Essential Liberty doesn’t, it simply shows an average guy discovering that everything he held dear turned out to be wrong.
