The Philippines is infamous for draconian gun control, but once in a while they do something right:
The Police Regional Office 9 (PRO9) Press Corps had undergone a whole day seminar on safety gun handling and practical firing at the EXECOM firing range in PRO9 headquarters in Camp Romeo Abendan in Barangay Mercedes, this city, Saturday.
The seminar was initiated by PRO9 regional director Chief Supt. Juanito Vaño Jr. purposely to train local media on proper safety and handling of firearms.
Vaño said he considers the media practitioners as their partners in crime busting and prevention.
Vaño cited an example, “wherever the police personnel have an operation or responding to a crime incident, the media are also there to cover the event and as partners, it is necessary that they must learn how to defend themselves in case the law enforcer is already unable to protect them.
The seminar and practical shooting were conducted by the accredited range officers, retired police Chief Inspector Antonio Clarito and Lito Nuevo, both of PRO9 Execom.
Meanwhile, PRO9 spokesman and press corps adviser Sr. Insp. Joseph Ortega said he believes that media practitioners covering police operations and crime incidents already knows proper handling of firearms.
Ortega expressed gratitude to the members of the PRO9 press corps for their cooperation and support to the PRO9 headquarters.
Joining the media practitioners were personnel of the Firearms Explosive Security and Guards Section.
During the opening program, Regional Chief Directorial Staff Sr. Supt. Patrocinio Comendador represented the regional director in the activity.

I can only wish some of our American journalists got the same training, especially the ones that confuse semi-automatics with automatics. Either way, no journalist should die while covering a story. Sometimes you have to put the camera/microphone down and defend yourself.
