Gun posession banned for convicted of domestic abuse in Minnesota

Here’s what happened:

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Gov. Mark Dayton has signed a bill restricting gun possession rights for people convicted of domestic abuse and those subject to restraining orders.

The measure was among 19 bills signed by Dayton Friday.

The bill requires people convicted of child or domestic abuse to give up their firearms permanently. A person subject to an order of protection could regain right of possession when an order expires unless a judge extends the order.

It’s rare for Minnesota to tighten gun laws. Advocates cited statistics they said showed the chances of an abuse victim dying due to domestic violence rise when a gun is present.

This is a useless law, it doesn’t protected anyone. Buying cocaine is illegal, yet you can get it. Child abuse is a horrible crime, yet it rarely features the use of a gun, and what about all those serial killers that use knives, are we gonna ban them as well?

I just hope that the process to ban a man from his firearms is long and complicated, and not based on the whims of an angry spouse.

As for the advocates of this law, are they saying that Mr. Beater is not going to slap his wife if there’s no gun in the house? “Sorry honey, I can’t hit you, there’s no gun in the house.” Does that sound realistic? And what about women who slap their husbands, are they gonna lose their guns as well?

As for the “order of protection,”  let’s ask Bonnie about it.

On March 5, 1991 Bonnie Elmasri called a firearms instructor, worried that her husband-who was subject to a restraining order to stay away from her-had been threatening her and her children. When she asked the instructor about getting a handgun, the instructor explained that Wisconsin has a 48-hour waiting period. Ms. Elmasri and her two children were murdered by her husband twenty-four hours later.

How do you sleep at night, Governor Dayton? You’re not protecting anyone! Let everyone keep and bear arms and we’ll protect ourselves.
