Ayn Rand on Gun Ownership.

Ayn Rand was the champion of individualism, “The smallest minority on earth is the individual. Those who deny individual rights cannot claim to be defenders of minorities,” so the following isn’t surprising.

“InAtlas Shrugged, Hank Rearden carries a handgun: “He carried a gun in his pocket, as advised by the policemen of the radio car that patrolled the roads; they had warned him that no road was safe after dark, these days.” Passing over the irony that Rand has the police in a highly collectivist state advising a private individual to carry a gun, there is nothing in this passage to suggest support for gun control. It could be interpreted to suggest the opposite, since Rand has one of her heros carrying a privately owned gun, and even contemplating (later in the passage) its use against the police. (In subsequent passages of the novel, other of Rand’s heros, including Dagny Taggart and Francisco D’Anconia, use guns. However, in the later parts of the novel the culture has broken down into open armed conflict, so these passages are not as clearly relevant to the question of carrying arms in a peaceful society.)”

50-Year-Old Gun Owner Shoots Two Armed Robbers.

This story makes me smile.

“A 50-year-old University District resident and his two sons were washing a family car in his driveway Sunday evening when all hell broke loose.

One of two armed robbers approached the trio, put a gun to the neck of one of the sons, chased him into a yard where he took a necklace and cash from him, then fired a shot.

That’s when John R. Hunt Sr. went back into his Minnesota Avenue home to retrieve his 9 mm handgun.

After Hunt returned to the scene, both suspects pointed their guns at him.

So he fired at them, striking one of the robbers in the chest, the other in the left thigh.”

No Gun? No Business.

While it’s impossible to boycott everyone who hates our guns, it’s important to be aware.

2aCheck.com has a long list. Some are surprising, why is CheaperThanDirt on the list?

  1. When they stopped selling certain “politically incorrect” items after the Newtown, CT shooting, we took offense.
  2. When they jacked up their prices after the ensuing shortages, we took offense.
  3. They have crossed the line.  In an attempt to persuade customers to support a gun control bill CTD employee Dave Dolbee wrote an article entitled “I Support Toomey-Manchin and You Should Too!” and posted it on their website.  (Read here about why the bill is actually bad for our rights)

We tried to give slack to a company that makes a living selling gun related products to us, but that ends today (April 15, 2013).  There are too many gun friendly alternatives to support this company.”
