Sioux Fall senior points gun at newspaper delivery men

Want to get in trouble? Follow his example.

SIOUX FALLS, South Dakota — A Sioux Falls man is accused of pointing a handgun at two people delivering a newspaper to his home.

Police spokesman Sam Clemens says 72-year-old Allan Dean Hansen allegedly walked outside his home and pointed a .357 revolver at the workers on Wednesday morning.

He was arrested on a charge of aggravated assault after the delivery workers called police.

Clemens says Hansen admitted to pointing his gun at the workers because there had been a lot of criminal activity in the area and he wanted to figure out who they were.

Here’s what I don’t get, I thought assault mean someone punched you in the face or hit you with a bat. While having a gun pointed at you can be intimidating and it’s reckless if you’re a good guy, is it really assault?

On the other hand, did the old man forgot he had a newspaper subscription or do some newspapers deliver free papers or trial papers to some homeowners? Maybe they’re like the yellowpages?

Either way, this is why we:

1. Evaluate the situation

2. Approach the suspects or call the cops (if we can)

3. Only draw our weapons as a last resort
