Putting gun deaths in perspective

- 577,190 people died from cancer (2012)
- 480,000 people died from illnesses related to smoking (2012)
- 88,000 people died from illnesses related to alcohol (2012)
- 42,000 people died from illnesses related to second hand smoke (2012)
- 37,792 people died from unintentional drug overdoses (2010)
- 33,808 people died in car crashes (2009)
- 15,529 people died from HIV/AIDS
- 10,322 people were murdered in car crashes caused by drunk drivers
- 8,855 people were murdered by a person who used a gun

Something that should also be mentioned:
5-7 children are murdered every day by abusive parents (starved, beaten and worse). Experts say the number is much, much higher. These statistics are gathered from death certificates. Of all child deaths 50%-70% are not listed as murder for “cause of death” when they should be. So those children aren’t counted for these numbers.

You can draw your own conclusions.

Republicans Question Fung’s Record on Guns

FYI…

Cranston Mayor and Republican candidate for governor Allan Fung. WPRO File Photo.

By Bill Haberman, WPRO News

Gun rights supporters are questioning Republican gubernatorial candidate Allan Fung, as WPRO’s John Loughlin discovers records of then-councilman Fung authoring and supporting a resolution asking Cranston gun shops not to sell assault weapons in 2004.

“I was very disappointed when I read that,” said Ed Doyle, founder of the Rhode Island branch of the Guns Rights Across America. He said he was shocked by the news.

In a statement, Fung confirmed the 2004 vote and suggested his support of guns rights has evolved since those City Council votes.

“At the time of the non-binding resolution, I had never used a firearm and was unfamiliar with the differences among specific firearms,” wrote Fung. He said his position changed after spending time with friends at firing ranges and learning the real issue is keeping guns from the hands of criminals.

A spokesman for Fung’s Republican rival Ken Block did not criticize the Cranston Mayor, saying Block supports Rhode Island gun laws and his campaign is focused on the economy.

People can change, the question is, has he changed?  And why is Block not criticizing Fung over this? Jesus Christ, all these RINO’s want to focus on the economy, guess what? The 2nd Amendment is part of the economy! Selling guns is good for business, shooting crooks is also good for business.

Ken Block needs to realize RINO’s aren’t the only ones that vote.

Another gun buyback in Boston

One incident creates a silly overreaction, here’s the incident:

On Friday morning, a 14-year-old boy was playing with a loaded gun inside his family’s three-decker on Morton Street when the gun went off, according to police, and the bullet struck the boy’s 9-year-old brother in the chest, killing him.

Here’s the reaction:

Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh said the city will partner with the police department on a gun buyback program, in an effort to reduce the high number of guns circulating in the city.

“The message for me is clear,” said Walsh. “We need help from the community to find out where these guns are. Let us know, alert police, so we can work to get these guns off the streets.”

How ridiculous, guns don’t “circulate,” they’re inanimate objects, most of them sit in drawers or closets, some of them don’t even work. There are far more bike accidents than gun accidents, yet you don’t hear of a bike buyback, do you?

Glenn Hegar Gun Ad

Who says political advertising has to be boring? Check out this spot by Glenn Hegar who’s running for comptroller in Texas.

“Guns have nothing to do with the comptroller job,” said Collier. “I like guns. I own a gun, but that’s not the issue. The issue is that we need somebody who knows accounting. We need a watchdog. That job is to be a watchdog. That agency is to hold people accountable. Guns and abortion aren’t relevant to the discussion.”

Envy is a sin, Collier, if you’re jealous that the NRA didn’t endorse you, being more pro-gun.

Wendy Davis Gun Record

This is interesting, Wendy has voted pro-gun three times out of four.

Davis is not likely to earn an endorsement from the National Rifle Association any time soon, but according to votesmart.org, Davis voted “yea” on three of four “key votes” related to gun rights in the Texas Legislature dating back to 2011, including a bill establishing school marshals.

In other words, if I go to UT and someone tries to assault me, I better pray it happens in the parking lot and I’m already inside the car. Thanks but no thanks, Wendy.

For the sake of argument, if Davis were to become the next governor of Texas, and then backtrack on a “open carry” law, it would qualify as one of the biggest political fibs in state history.

Davis, who supports allowing property owners to determine for themselves whether handguns can be carried in public view on their property, deserves the benefit of the doubt on this one.

For the sake of argument, Woodrow Wilson and FDR got elected promising peace and delivered war, so if you want us to take a chance with Wendy Davis, you can forget about it.
