MA Gov signs new anti-gun laws

Here’s what’s happening in the People’s Republic of Massachusetts.

BOSTON (AP) — Gov. Deval Patrick has signed a sweeping overhaul of the state’s gun laws.

The bill signed Wednesday stiffens penalties for some gun-based crimes, creates a Web-based portal for real-time background checks in private gun sales, and creates a firearms trafficking unit within the state police.

It also lets police chiefs ask a court to deny firearms identification cards needed to buy rifles or shotguns to individuals they feel are unsuitable.

The bill also mandates Massachusetts join the National Instant Background Check System, which requires the state to transmit information about substance abuse or mental health commitments to a federal database police use to review firearms applications.

Patrick also signed an economic development bill and a $1.9 billion, four-year environmental bond bill Wednesday.

Democrats need SPENDING control, but let’s look at this laws:

Real-time background checks in private gun sales? OK, say I’m a bad guy with a criminal record and Jerry Jones tells me he won’t sell me his gun until I go through a real-time background check. What will I do?  I’ll buy my gun from someone else.

As for the firearms trafficking unit, I thought they already have one, or don’t we already have a BATF that’s supposed to deal with firearms trafficking? Talk about being redundant.

As for the police chiefs asking a court to deny our rights, that violates the principle of innocent until proven guilty.
