What do you think?
Florida is considering a bill, HB 89, that would protect citizens who defensively display firearms or who fire warning shots, from being victimized by the law for the act of defending themselves. The genesis of the law is the fact that most people are able to defend themselves by merely showing the attacker that they are armed. This defuses the situation in the vast majority of cases: people do not want to be shot. There’s apparently no truth to the rumor that, should it be enacted, the law will be known in the Sunshine State as Jill Biden’s Law . . .

Let’s look at the Positives.
- Perfect for Bleeding Hearts that want to scare but not kill
- Now you can reenact that Three Amigos scene were the Mexican fires his weapon at the feet of the amigos
- Less people go to jail, taxpayers save money
Here are the Negatives
- It encourages irresponsible gun use. Brandishing your gun to scare a criminal is OK, shooting him in self-defense is OK, with a warning shot it’s hard to tell whether you’re scared or are actually the aggressor.
- Where will the bullet fall? Will it hurt a bystander? I guess proponents could argue that in that case, charges could be brought for involuntary manslaughter.
The Truth about Guns disagrees with me: “The bill appears to be modeled closely on the Arizona law. It is common sense legislation designed to promote safety. Who could oppose that?”
Maybe he’s right, if this law increases the rate of gun ownership since now the bleeding-hearts can issue warning shots instead of deadly force, perhaps it’s a good thing.
