Appeal To Retailers: Check Guns At The Door

State’s congressional delegation urges voluntary policies

Can moral suasion — in the absence of tougher statutory controls — help to quell the incidents of gun violence that continue to plague this country?

That’s the hope of Connecticut’s congressional delegation. The lawmakers are urging retailers to adopt a voluntary and sensible policy of asking their armed customers to leave their guns at the door.

The lawmakers are to be commended for mounting this campaign on behalf of safety.

Such a policy adopted by retailers is grounded in common sense and in the best interests of business: Most people are not “open carry” advocates and feel vulnerable at the sight of people carrying firearms in stores and restaurants. That can’t be good for business.

Besides, the threat to public safety is real. At Wal-Mart alone, since the Sandy Hook massacre 18 months ago, 79 shootings have occurred and 19 shooting fatalities, U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal said at a press conference Friday. He called on the National Retail Federation to adopt “common sense” policies for customers like those already put in place by Starbucks and Chipotle.

“All across the country retail establishments are less safe, more vulnerable to these kinds of tragedies than ever before,” Mr. Blumenthal said.

Delegation members also asked for support from the nation’s largest retailers: Wal-Mart, Kroger, Target, Costco, Home Depot, Walgreens, CVS, Caremark, Lowes, Safeway and McDonald’s.

Delegation members — all Democrats — are asking as well for the retail industry’s support for federal legislation closing the loopholes in the law requiring background checks of gun purchasers.

But that bill — overwhelmingly supported by the public in opinion polls — is hung up in Congress due to obstruction by the gun lobby.

In the meantime, voluntary policies adopted by industry to keep firearms out of retail establishments would be useful. It would doubtless save lives.

2. Do you really think I’m going to trust a $400-$1000 gun with a perfect stranger?

3. Assuming you have a gun locker, can you guarantee it won’t be broken into?

4. Will the criminals be checking their guns?

5. Chipotle and Starbucks still allow concealed carry.

6. Retailers should be afraid of gun owners NOT bringing their guns:

  1. If they are serious about demanding that law-abiding citizens are disarmed in so-called “gun free zones” they’d better plan on installing metal detectors to protect them from criminals who obviously won’t disarm themselves!

I hope people start suing these businesses after anything happens. They are putting themselves in the role of “lord and protector” and should be held accountable.

    • You’re absolutely right, and let’s not forget that even with metal detectors, the gunman can still shoot the security guards, and do damage.
