Blumenthal wants to Rodgers’ shooting spree to revive gun control bill

They never let an opportunity go to waste:

A mass shooting in Isla Vista, Calif., may prompt lawmakers to make another attempt at gun-ownership restrictions, a Connecticut senator said Sunday.

In the latest incident, 22-year-old Elliot Rodger allegedly set out on a rampage Friday that ended with seven dead and 13 injured from gunshot and stab wounds.

“I really sincerely hope that this tragedy — this unimaginable, unspeakable tragedy — will provide an impetus to bring back measures that would keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people who are severely troubled or deranged, like this young man was, and provide resources — we need mental health resources,” Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D., Conn.) said on CBS’s Face the Nation.

Following the December 2012 shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., lawmakers attempted to expand the system of background checks aimed at detecting buyers ineligible to own guns. The effort collapsed in the Senate.

Mr. Blumenthal said he would try to bring back the legislation, possibly reconfigured to center on mental health.

Also speaking on CBS, Sen. John Thune (R., S.D.) said lawmakers should focus on policies “that allow people with mental health issues like these to be diagnosed and to be treated. I think that’s something on which there is agreement, and that’s where we ought to be focusing our efforts.”

We already know Rodger’s parents called the cops who visited him and found nothing wrong, they even described their son as polite and friendly, so Blumenthal’s bill is a waste of time, and will result in gun-owner harassment.

  1. First it was a knifing, shooting, and injuries caused by vehicle. Then a mass shooting (only three were shot, four counting suicide, but forget the 3 by knife, 4 by car). Now it is a massacre. When does it turn into the apocalypse??

    • You have a point, I was using the language the media uses, I think when more than 3 die, it’s considered a massacre. I will revise.
