West Covina council to review gun buyback program

Councilman Mike Spence has balls, instead of just going along with the gun buyback, he’s raising objections.

WEST COVINA >> A gun buyback program scheduled for Jan. 25 will get reviewed at the next City Council meeting after one member raised concerns about evidence getting destroyed.

The Police Department’s gun buyback program promises “no questions asked” — but Councilman Mike Spence said the lack of checks could cause problems.

“Unintentionally or intentionally, that gives the opportunity for guns to be given in West Covina — that we pay for — that could have been used in a crime,” Spence said.

The recently sworn-in council member requested staff create a report about that possibility by the next council meeting. That meeting is Jan. 21, four days before the buyback takes place in the City Hall parking lot.

He also correctly pointed out that many studies prove that gun buyback programs don’t reduce gun crime.

“We’ll accept all firearms, whether they are registered, not registered, illegal,” Bell said. “It doesn’t matter, no one will be prosecuted for turning in firearms.”

Sorry Bell, it does matter. I don’t want some thief getting a $50 gift card.
