Weku 88.9 (NPR) claims 100,000 are injured or killed by guns

Here’s what these liars wrote:

Preventing Gun Violence on Eastern Standard
By John Hingsbergen

Over a 100,000 people are injured or killed by gun violence in the US each year. That’s according to a report commissioned by the Centers for Disease Control.

The report recommends a “public health approach” to preventing future harm and injuries.

On this week’s Eastern Standard, our topic is “preventing gun violence.” Is it through tougher and more restrictive laws or education and firearms training.

Funny how they didn’t link to the CDC report. I asked Mr. Google his opinion on the subject, he disagrees:

Mortality Stats from the CDC

All homicides

  • Number of deaths: 16,259
  • Deaths per 100,000 population: 5.3

Firearm homicides

Mortality Stats from Gun Policy

Gun Homicides

2011: 11,101

Handgun Homicides
2012: 6,371

Long Gun Homicides

2012: 625

So where did this 100,000 figure came from? Is it one of those secret CDC studies not released to the public? Or is NPR just doing their usual taxpayer-funded propaganda?

Here are some facts that even a gun-hater like David Frum cannot deny:

“Government figures from the National Survey of Criminal Victimization suggest 100,000 uses a year of guns in self-defense against crime, the vast majority of these uses being the display of weapons to deter or dissuade.”

Yes, David Frum wrote those very words, you can check the link if you doubt me. Of course, he also wrote:

“There are some problems with these government numbers, beginning with the fact that they are based on data from the early 1990s, when crime rates were much higher than they are today. The number of criminal attempts has declined 30% to 40% since then, and one would expect the number of occasions for self-defense to decline correspondingly.”

Fine David, let’s lower the number to 50,000 self-defense uses, even that number is greater than the number of criminals shooting each other and innocent people. But before we do that, let’s consider that not every incident of self-defense results in the survivor calling 911, not everything gets reported. Thus it’s entirely possible that the number is actually much greater than the government’s statistic.

Since NPR is “interested in hearing from you,” then by all means, do email them at  [email protected] and remind them that our Second Amendment is not a public health epidemic, but a God given right.
