How anti-gunners lie about gun shows.

Anti-gunners play interesting tricks, here’s one of them:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The percentage of people arrested after being denied permission to buy firearms at Virginia gun shows has increased over the last two years.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that 10.6 percent of the people who were denied permission to buy guns in 2011 were charged with an offense related to being someone legally prohibited from possessing a firearm. That increased to 12.4 percent in 2012 and to 27 percent last year.

Thomas Baker is a criminologist at Virginia Commonwealth University. He says that while the upward trend is a positive sign, it’s important to note that those who weren’t arrested after failing a background check could simply go to a private seller at a show and buy a gun. Existing law requires only federally licensed dealers to run background checks.

Sounds like a lot, doesn’t it? 10.6%, 12.4%, yet here’s the question you should be asking: How many people went to the gun show and how many got arrested? If one person got arrested in 2011 and 2 got arrested in 2012, that’s a 100% increase and if they only give you the percentages, it sounds like a lot, but when you look at the actual numbers you see it’s insignificant.

Here’s the truth:

According to an NIJ study released in December 1997 (“Homicide in Eight U.S. Cities,” a report that covers much more than homicide), only 2 percent of criminal guns come from gun shows.

Assuming that’s the case in Virginia, 27% of 2% is 1.35%, in other words, maybe 3.35% of criminals bought their guns at the gun show. Don’t expect the Democrats to care about the 96.65% of Americans that also went to the gun show and committed no crimes.
