Regarding Pro-Gun Liberals.

The mainstream media attacks against “extremists” and calls for “moderation” is beginning to affect some well-intentioned gun owners.

This was my response to a blog about plastic guns:

“One could argue that liberals are anti-science. What if the military wants to develop plastic guns? If the libs want to improve metal detectors, they can do that, but if the future includes plastic guns, laser guns, etc, I welcome that.”

This was the response I got from a commenter:

Once again there’s another anti-productive generalization about liberals. As I said in another post, we will see further erosion of our gun rights if the pro-gun side continues to isolate itself to the far right. If you really care about preserving the second amendment, you should be looking to include as many people in the movement as possible, otherwise anti-gun sentiment could reach a critical mass, leading to a possible repeal of the second amendment, which is really the last line of legal defense that we have against the attacks we’ve been trying to fend off the past few years.

Yes, there are a few pro-gun liberals out there:

Liberal gun owners appear in the social media campaign of “The Truth About Guns,” a blog encouraging gun owners to post photos of themselves in order to humanize them. There’s the woman in a salmon-pink blazer who voted for Obama, the socially liberal anti-war veteran of Iraq, the pro-union, pro-choice, pro-gay marriage, pro–Second Amendment feminist. And they are engaging in debates like my family’s on forums like the Liberal Gun Club.

But are they not the exception? Cold hard data matters to me, if 90% of Blacks always vote for gun-hating Democrats, I can’t spend a lot of my energies reaching them, specially when they respond with comments such as:

Nothing else you said is wortht listening to if you love Herman Cain…most black people understand he is a lying womanizer and would never vote for him….that shows you can not discern good from evil….

How do you argue with people that can’t use logic? What about all the sex scandals of Marion Barry, Jessee Jackson, Al Sharpton… need I go on? The rare fair-minded liberal like Juan Williams won’t be casting stones because he’s smart enough to know what dirt lies on his lot, yet Williams is a rare breed of liberal, the one that’s willing to entertain your arguments.

The reality is that we all make generalizations at some point. The pro-life movement for example isn’t crazy about gays, which I find ironic since lesbians rarely go to the abortion clinic and gays don’t exactly get women pregnant. Still, just like secular, gay-friendly pro-lifers are rare the rare liberal who happens to love guns.

The NRA has no litmus test when it comes to memberships beyond passing a background check. Michael Moore was allowed to become a life member of the NRA, at the end of the day, I’d rather see that nut giving us his money than keeping it in his pocket.

Thus the idea that we have to moderate ourselves is bogus. As Ann Coulter puts it “As far as I’m concerned, I’m a middle-of-the-road moderate, it’s the rest of you who are crazy.”
