Excellent news for friends of freedom:
Firearm silencers would become easier to obtain in Iowa under legislation advancing in the Iowa House.
A subcommittee of the House Judiciary Committee will approve a bill removing “suppressors” – the devices commonly referred to as silencers that muffle the sound of a discharging firearm – from a list of weapons restricted under Iowa law.
State Rep. Matt Windschitl, R-Missouri Valley, is sponsoring legislation to ease access to firearm silencers (Jason Noble/The Register).
Supporters say the change will bring Iowa in line with almost 40 other states across the country, and note that silencers are still subject to federal background checks and record keeping.
Silencers, they added, are a safety and courtesy feature that can protect the ears of users and bystanders at firing ranges.
Concerns that more legally available silencers might allow more shootings and criminal activities involving guns to go undetected are unfounded, said bill sponsor Matt Windschitl, R-Missouri Valley, because criminals are unlikely to undergo the extensive process required to obtain one and because instructions for homemade silencers are widely available.
The language expanding access to silencers will be amended onto House File 384, a firearms deregulation bill that was introduced but did not advance in the House last year
