PC Kills Anti-Aircraft Gun Display in Park

When it comes to public art, some cities will spend thousands of dollars on things normal people hate. Well, here the art was going to be an anti-aircraft gun that was used to shoot our enemies during WW2, the purchase was extremely cheap for government standards, only $10,500, but a loud group of anti-war haters, shut it down.

BETHLEHEM, Conn. (AP) _ Bethlehem officials have dropped plans to purchase a World War II-era anti-aircraft gun to decorate the Town Green.

Voters decided in May to earmark money to improve the Green and replace a cannon melted down in 1942 to help the war effort. The Board of Selectmen agreed to pay $10,500 for a twin Hotchkiss 13.2-mm anti-aircraft gun.

The Republican-American reports (http://bit.ly/1dcrYft ) that some residents criticized the decision. Opponents expressed anti-war sentiments and concerns that the machine gun did not fit with the green’s character.

First Selectman Lenny Assard said he was not sure the anti-aircraft gun is appropriate.

Former Selectmen Edward A. Roden, who was defeated by Assard in the first selectman’s race in November, said the anti-aircraft gun is not a symbol of war. He says it honors those who served.

The anti-aircraft gun IS both a symbol of war and a tribute to the men who keep s free, and that’s a good thing, Mr. Roden. We don’t have to apologize for war, the Russians themselves have a Museum of the Great Patriotic War (what we call WW2), you can’t be a country if you don’t honor those who fight for your country.

War is what define us, it’s what keep us free. Our own National Anthem talks about bombs bursting in air, and I hope we never replace that one with “God Bless America.” (as it almost happened in the 1950s) I have nothing against God, but I’m far more interested in war than in fruited plains for crying out loud.

I’m not surprised this happened in Connecticut, here in the South we often get criticized for not letting go of the Civil War, there are people in Blue States, not all but some, who can’t understand the obvious, that some people are proud of their ancestors, proud of their sacrifice. Maybe this is why we have Civil War Reenactments, maybe if they had World War II reenactments in the North the people there would be more pro-war.

I wonder what The Greatest Generation thinks of these war opponents? I understand opposing the draft, I myself despise the draft as un-American, you can’t promote freedom by engaging in slavery, but to oppose a decommissioned gun? A symbol of our glorious past? Talk about an insult on all of us, the real Americans.

  1. What about that small thing called history? Shouldn’t “the children” learn about the history of our country?
