What are the normal ways to fight crime? If you’re Andrew Cuomo, they’re not building more prisons, arresting more criminals, and encouraging law-abiding people to keep and bear arms.
The state would end its successful Operation Impact crime-fighting initiative and replace it with a program to fight gun violence upstate, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced today.
Started in 2004 under Gov. George Pataki, Operation Impact had been hailed as focusing the resources of police agencies toward areas of crime upstate, leading to a 14 percent decline in crime in those regions.
But Cuomo is proposing the $15 million a year for the program be shifted to a gun-violence program, called GIVE — Gun-Involved Violence Elimination. He said Operation Impact has largely led to a reduction in property crime.
“Through GIVE, local law enforcement will adopt proven strategies to prevent gun violence, ensuring that New York remains the safest large state in the nation,” according to the budget presentation.
The proposal comes after Cuomo last year shepherded through the Legislature a tough gun-control law that has been assailed by gun-rights groups.

If you’re a New Yorker, you should GIVE a crap since they’re wasting your money. I did a search and only found Cuomo’s speech about it here. Apparently, they fight crime by engaging in “call ins”, I supposed that’s Government-Speak for visiting suspicious individuals before they shoot others, but I’m not sure.
