City of Sanford doesn’t understand Florida laws.

Because Florida has a state preemption on firearm laws, “No city, town or county can pass more restrictive laws in regards to guns and firearm carry than the state. This means Sanford cannot actually make it illegal for neighborhood watch volunteers to carry a gun if they are properly licensed to do so by the state.”

Of course, that’s not going to stop them from trying:

According to several media reports, the city of Sanford, FL will attempt to put in place new rules which forbid members of neighborhood watches from carrying guns.

The city’s new police chief requested the policy and it will be announced at an upcoming community meeting.

According to the Orlando Sentinel,

The no-gun policy was requested by police Chief Cecil Smith to better regulate the city’s network of residents looking out for one another to promote safer neighborhoods, Police Department spokeswoman Shannon Cordingly said.

“We never encouraged people to carry guns,” Cordingly said.

The new changes, to be announced at a community meeting Tuesday at 7 p.m. at City Hall, include formal training and registration of all volunteers.

The good news is that these laws don’t mean anything. So if you come to the meeting, do let them know they’re wasting their time. Anyone with a concealed carry license can carry his gun wherever the law allows it.

Of course if Sanford wishes to become the Republic of Sanford or secede from Florida and become the State of Sanford, they can try that. Key West tried becoming “The Conch Republic” and I think they were free for a day.

Oh Sanford, what happened to you? You got rid of a good sheriff who didn’t arrest Zimmerman, now you have cop that hates the 2nd Amendment. Really?  What good is a neighborhood watch without guns? Heck, I would have the watch wear uniforms and do open carry, let the criminals know you’re packing. Concealed carry is nice for other occasions, but a neighborhood watch is different. You’ve got to be visible and prepared.
