A Bright Idea: AR-15 Giveaway for Lee Bright supporters

Tired of Lindsey “The RINO” Graham? Then if you live in South Carolina, Lee Bright might be a better choice.

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -Political campaigns always have ways of getting the attention of voters. Whether it be through signing pledges or head-scratching quotes, campaigns always find a way.

Enter state Sen. Lee Bright, who is running against US Sen. Lindsey Graham in June’s Republican Primary.

In an effort to raise his profile for his grassroots campaign, Bright is offering up a bit of a contest to one lucky citizen.

The prize? A Palmetto Armory AR-15 semi-automatic rifle.

This wouldn’t be the first time a political candidate gave away a weapon. Candidates across the nation from Arkansas to Oklahoma and Texas have all used a gun giveaway to raise their profiles.

Bright announced the contest through a campaign letter Thursday afternoon. Referencing the deadly shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School as a “defining moment”, Bright slams the gun control efforts that spawned following the shooting.

Lawmakers around the country began proposing various gun control bills after the December 2012 tragedy. In Washington DC, one such bill introduced in the US Senate would have expanded background checks and closed several gun sale loopholes.

That effort failed to pass the Senate by six votes.

Bright says the failure of those efforts is one of the reasons why he’s running for Senate.

“Thanks to the action of Second Amendment supporters all over the country, their schemed failed — even despite my Republican Primary opponent, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham,” said Bright. “Friend, I don’t know about you, but that betrayal wasn’t one any Second Amendment supporter anywhere in the country will soon forget.”

Continuing in his campaign e-mail, Bright boasts of his pro-gun bona fides, such as his A-rating from the NRA and the fact that he introduced plenty of pro-gun legislation as a state legislator.

As for his opponent, Bright says sending Graham back to the Senate would be a “recipe for disaster.”

We have reached out to Sen. Graham’s campaign for a statement.

The winner will be drawn on Feb. 15 at 5 p.m.
