Dolan Springs, AZ – Deputies said a 9-year-old girl accidentally shot a gun instructor in the head Monday morning at a range in Dolan Springs.

The shooting happened about 10 a.m. at an outdoor range in the 20600 block of North Highway 93.

Mohave County deputies said the girl was at the range with her parents when a gun she had fired. The shot hit the 39-year-old instructor in the head.

The instructor was flown to a Las Vegas-area hospital for treatment. Neither his identity nor his condition were immediately released.

This case is under investigation, deputies said.

9-year-old girl dies after bicycle accident

BROOKVILLE, Ind. (AP) – A 9-year-old girl has died after she was injured in a bicycle accident at an Indiana state campground.

The state Department of Natural Resources says the girl was rapidly cycling down a paved incline at the Mounds Recreational Area campground in southeastern Indiana when she tried to slow down by using her feet instead of the brakes.

Authorities say the bicycle went off the road and hit a ditch, causing her neck and throat to strike the bike’s handlebars. Police say she wasn’t wearing a helmet.

Morgan football player died of heat stroke, autopsy shows

Autopsy results showing that Morgan State University football player Marquese Meadow died of heat stroke have prompted his mother to question whether coaches and trainers monitored the heat at practice or gave players enough water breaks.

Meadow, an 18-year-old freshman from Washington, D.C., died early Sunday after being hospitalized for two weeks. School officials said he became disoriented after an Aug. 10 football practice.

Another Cheerleader Dies

…14-year-old Ashley Burns, of Medford, Mass., who on August 9, 2005 died of an injury to her spleen during a practice session at East Elite Cheer Gym in Tewksbury, Mass. Burns was in the middle of a move known as an arabesque double-down when she failed to complete the second of two twists. She landed chest down and died shortly after.

Police: Jogger died on bridge from natural causes

Natural causes, perhaps some type of medical problem, caused a male jogger to collapse and die on the Roebling Suspesion Bridge during morning rush hour Friday, Covington police officials said.

The bridge was shut down in both directions for about a half hour before partially reopening about 7:45 a.m. The southbound lanes reopened a short time later.

The man’s body was spotted by a passerby just after 7 a.m.

His name and age have not been released yet, but Covington Police Chief Spike Jones said the man is believed to be in his late 40s or early 50s.

Folks, I hope you can detect sarcasm, because in reality I don’t want to ban  anything. We’re all free individuals, free to do what we like as long as we don’t hurt others, and pay the consequences when we do.

Life happens, and while every death is a tragedy, a life lived fearing death isn’t worth living. Besides, 99.99% of the time nothing happens. A world without guns, football, cheer-leading, scuba-diving, horseback-riding, etc., would be a sad world. Risk is what makes life exciting, and guns are still one of the safest activities you can try, far more children are killed in accidental drownings than shootings, in spite of the number of people with swimming pools being microscopic compared to gun owners.
