Willie Robertson wavers on Gun Rights

I hate background checks, but Willie Robertson disagrees:

Willie Robertson wants to get President Obama on his turf for a duck hunt.

“I’d like to get him out there with some camouflage and a gun and we could sit out there and talk,” the “Duck Dynasty” star told conservative radio host Laura Ingraham.

“I’d like to talk and debate and find out what’s going on in his brain a little more … I don’t shy away from people I disagree with.”

Obama previously said the clan of Republican Christian pro-gun advocates “seem like a pretty fun bunch.”

The Louisiana native actually ran into Obama in January at the State of the Union address and Robertson, 41, said he has met Obama “a couple of times.”

Though a staunch conservative and proud NRA spokesman, Robertson actually does agree with Obama’s push for background checks on gun purchases.

“I’m okay with a background check. I have a lot of weapons and every time I have to go fill out the paperwork to get the weapon,” he told FOX News in August.

Robertson, the CEO of the family’s Duck Commander empire, did say he was offended by Obama’s 2008 campaign remark about bitter people who cling to “guns or religion.”

Willie, we’re not talking about store background checks here, we’re talking about background checks for a father giving his gun to his son, a neighbor borrowing a gun for a hunting trip, a private sale, etc. If you’re an NRA member, I hope you’re getting America’s First Freedom because it sounds to me you have been misinformed.

  1. Great. Watch the media instantly pounce on this. I bet Willie doesn’t know the difference between the Brady background check at an FFL, and what Obama wants: government approval of EVERY gun transfer in America. I bet Phil Robertson has bought guns from people without a so-called “background check” (which is nothing but a check of name against a list of prohibited persons). Willie should know better.

And for the record: if a person is dangerous that they are prohibited from possessing guns, why is he/she free? Felons should have their natural rights restored after they pay their debt to society.

    • The problem with hunters is they’re already used to being regulated. They know all about hunting licenses, bag fees, what animals you can and can’t shoot, they undergo hunter education, so maybe Willie isn’t bothered by a background check. But you’re right, he should know better.

I’m reading a book about influence, and I learned about the Reciprocity Principle. There is a human drive to reciprocate, maybe Willie was trying to compromise or meet the reporter in the middle or find common ground. That’s his mistake, I always stand by my principles.

You want to agree with a gun hater? Agree about what to wear, what movie to watch, what fiction is good, but never ever give them an inch on gun rights.

Your last point is a great to. America used to be that way, there was a time you could walk out of prison and go into a gun store.
