Machete Kills Pit Bull

Where’s Mayors Against Illegal Machetes?

Boe the pit bull met his untimely end of the wrong side of a machete wielded by a neighbor.

Hilton Henry, 77, said he used the $7 machete to defend his cats from a known attacker.

But Boe’s owner, Michael Switz, denied that Boe has ever attacked cats or would charge anyone.

Henry won’t face any charges because his actions were self-defense, Plantation police said.

The dog “was on his property and supposedly the dog turned on him,” said police spokesman Phil Toman. “He defended himself. He happened to have a machete in his hand when he did it.”

On Monday, Switz, with help from neighbors, dug a 4-foot hole outside his bedroom window at the Sunshine City Mobile Home Park near Flamingo Road and buried Boe in his favorite flower-colored bedsheet.

“There was no reason for it,” Switz said. “He didn’t deserve what he got.”

Boe and Henry had clashed before. Henry said when Boe came to his house in April, he shined a flashlight in the dog’s face and successfully hollered “Get!” According to a police report filed at the time, Switz was given a verbal warning because Boe wasn’t on a leash.

“He’s been terrorizing people,” Henry said. He said he spent $200 on a fence but kept a small opening for the cats to come and go. But Boe still managed to push his way through, Henry said.

A few months ago, he bought a machete at Wal-Mart in case Boe came back.

On Monday, the dog was loose again. Henry said he was inside when he heard the dog attacking his cats and said he panicked, thinking they were being killed.

Henry told police he was doing yard work when the dog attacked, but he said Tuesday that it was incorrect since he only intended to do yard work later that day.

“It’s the cats or the dog,” he said. “I have to do something about it. I can’t let him kill my cats. I got in front of him. He came at me. It’s me or the dog. I got to stop him. I whacked him a couple times and that was it.”

Henry said he swung at the dog at least twice and the cuts to his throat killed him.

Switz got his dog back in a black garbage bag.

“My dog is underground, I’m not handling it real well,” said Switz, who raised Boe, who was at least 5, since he was a puppy. “I’m trying to stay calm. The worst thing you can do is hurt an animal.”

Henry said he’s upset, too. “I don’t like taking out no dog, I’m a dog lover,” he said. “I had dogs all my life. But these cats are my kids. They couldn’t get away, they are little babies. It’s a sad situation.”

  1. Exactly, it’s a pit bull, not a chihuahua or a golder retriever. Owning a dog is a big responsibility, here’s a tragic story I found googling “killed by pitbull,” it wasn’t the only case. That doesn’t mean I’ll demand a ban of pitbulls, just let us keep guns and machetes and we’ll fight back.
